The universe lost an original. There are three writers that come to the top of my mind when I think of Doctor Who: Terrance Dicks, Robert Holmes and Douglas Adams. Nobody combined humor and science-fiction like Douglas Adams did. There have been many people who have tried it, but he was the only one to not only do it successfully, but was also brilliant at the same time. He will be best remembered for his "Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy" series of novels and his time as script editor for "Doctor Who". Some of the most blatantly funny and best stories came out of his stay as script editor. The humour in his stories worked the best when it would take on an almost maniacal edge to it. Where having it be somewhat disturbing at the same time as it being very funny. It's a shame that his "invisible spaceship" could never be realized. Douglas Adams's passing came as quite a shock. He was only 49 and he was hard at work on a "Hitchhikers" movie which I hope will be completed in his memory. It's an end of an era. We have lost a genius who has helped shape the world of Science-Fiction and show the writing can be both brilliantly written and painfully funny. We will miss you Dougie Adams. |
